Top 3 Digital Marketing Tips for Startups

Helping businesses shout louder online – without blowing the budget.

Starting a business is exciting - but let’s be honest, marketing often slips down the to-do list. Many start-ups think a shiny website and a quick Facebook page will do the trick, but without a clear strategy it’s easy to feel lost in the digital marketing world.

The good news? Digital marketing doesn’t have to drain your budget. As a local marketing consultant, I’ve seen how a few smart (and free!) tactics can help start-ups stand out, connect with their community, and build engagement with their customers. All it takes is a little time and consistency - and the results are absolutely worth it.

1. Build a strong online presence, in the places that matter

If you only do one thing for your startup’s online presence, make it this. A Google Business Profile is the little box that pops up when someone searches for your business - and it’s an essential for local visibility. The benefits are huge for local businesses; better local SEO, more website clicks, phone calls and foot traffic, plus those all important reviews that build trust.

Setting it up is simple - claim your profile on Google Business with your Google account, add accurate contact details, opening hours and your website link, add in a few photos of your brand and voila, you’re on the map.

Make sure you dedicate a couple of hours every month to keep it up to date with fresh photos, offers, and make sure every early customer that comes through your doors leaves you a Google review - those reviews are like goldmines, so you may want to add in a little incentive for your customers.

It’s free, it’s fast, and it’ll put your startup on the map faster than you’d think.

2. Prioritise SEO - Search Engine Optimisation

For startups, strong SEO means your business shows up when people search for things like “best cafe in Suffolk”. The world of SEO can feel like a rabbit hole, especially with a constantly evolving algorithm, but there are a few simple steps that make a huge difference.

Check your Title Tags – keep them under 160 characters, include your main keyword + your brand name.

Write compelling Meta Descriptions – short, keyword-rich, and include a clear call-to-action.

Use the right keywords – research what your customers are Googling and weave those naturally into your site copy.

Add a blog section – post regularly to boost rankings, show your expertise, and build trust.

Keep content fresh – update pages and blogs to stay relevant for both Google and your audience.

Get an SEO audit – spot gaps, set priorities, and shape a strategy that works for your startup.

Start with your Title Tags and Meta Descriptions - these are the headlines and snippets that appear in search results. Keep them under 160 characters, include your main keyword plus your business name, and add a short, compelling call to action that makes people want to click. Next, think about the keywords your customers are actually Googling - these should naturally appear in your website copy, headings and even your FAQ’s.

And don’t underestimate the power of a blog. Regular posts help boost your rankings, show off your expertise, and build trust with your audience. Even one blog a week - whether it’s a guide, local insight or ‘how-to’ post - can make a big impact. If writing isn’t your thing, that’s where working with a marketing consultant (like me!) can help. One of the first things I do for new clients is an SEO audit, which highlights what’s working, what’s missing and where to focus first. From there, we can build a content strategy that helps your startup get seen by the right people.

 3. Build a community with your social media strategy

When you’re starting out, it’s tempting to treat social media as a free advertising board - but the real magic happens when you use it to build a community. For startups, your Facebook, Instagram or LinkedIn pages are like your local shop window: they’re where people get to know your brand, your story, and why they should support you. And trust me, people love championing local businesses, especially when they’re just getting off the ground.

Share those behind-the-scenes moments - the late night packing, the 100th customer, or your origin story of why you got started in the first place. These personal touches make your audience invested in your journey. You can keep it engaging with local giveaways - boosting engagement and getting local people talking about your brand.

Finally, think about how you can work with local influencers in the community - don’t worry, I’m not talking about celebrities with millions of followers. Local micro-influencers (food bloggers, fitness coaches, lifestyle creators), often have highly-engaged, local audiences. By collaborating with them - whether that’s sending some free goodies, or running a joint giveaway - you can get your startup in front of people who already trust their influencers’ recommendations.

If all of this still feels a bit overwhelming, don’t worry - you don’t have to do it all on your own.
