How to Change the Font Colour of Your Scrolling Bar in Squarespace

You know that little strip of text that glides across the top (or bottom) of some websites, on a loop, forever? That's called a scrolling bar, or a marquee if you want to sound fancy at a dinner party. And it's one of my favourite tiny features to add to a Squarespace site.

So what actually is it?

It's a strip of text that moves continuously across the screen, like an old-school news ticker. You can use it for pretty much anything: an announcement, your tagline, a little list of the services you offer, "as seen in" logos, even just your brand name on repeat. Squarespace makes it dead easy to add, no coding needed.

Why it's such a good feature to have

Websites can feel a bit... static. Everything just sits there. A scrolling bar gives your site a little bit of movement, a little bit of life, without you having to touch a line of code or hire a developer. It catches the eye, it draws people further down the page, and it's a really simple way to make a site feel more polished and considered. Honestly, it's one of those small details that makes a big difference to how professional a site feels.

Here's the bit almost nobody knows (I certainly didn't for ages!)

When you go to change the colour of the font in your scrolling bar, your instinct is probably to go hunting through the block settings themselves. Makes sense, right? But that's not where it lives.

It's actually got its own dedicated little section tucked inside your site-wide colour settings. So instead of styling it block by block, you style it the same way you'd style the rest of your site's look and feel, all in one place.

How to actually do it, step by step:

  1. Head to your Squarespace dashboard and click into Design.

  2. Go to Site Styles, then find Colors.

  3. Click into the colour theme that's being used on the section your scrolling bar sits in.

  4. Scroll through the list of elements you can style, you'll spot one just for your scrolling bar (sometimes listed as "Marquee" or "Scrolling Text").

  5. Pick your colour, and watch it update in the preview.

That's it! No code, no plugins, just a little digging in a place you probably didn't think to look.

A few things to keep in mind

Because the scrolling bar is tied to a colour theme rather than styled on its own, changing that theme's colours will affect everything else using it too, so it's worth double checking what else lives in that same section before you go changing things.

Have you got a scrolling bar on your site yet? Or is this the nudge you needed to finally add one?
